Outfit Ideas for Engagement Photo Shoots

Fashion is a fun way to express yourself and your individuality, but when it comes to engagement photography, what you wear can have a significant impact on how well your photos turn out. Adventure Photos has taken photos for thousands of happy couples, and we know that dressing for engagement photos can be both exciting and stressful. To that end, our professional photographers are always happy to offer outfit suggestions and our top tips on what to wear to your shoot.

Wear Clothes That Are “You”

Engagement photos should depict you and your partner’s authentic selves! Dress in outfits that you’d genuinely wear outside of the photoshoot. There’s nothing worse than having a wardrobe malfunction in the middle of a shoot, and if you’re wearing clothing that makes you annoyed or uncomfortable, that emotion will translate to your photos. On the other hand, ensuring you wear an outfit that makes you feel confident and beautiful will also show in your photos.

Choose Classic Over Trendy

Have you ever looked at wedding or engagement photos and thought, “this looks dated”? That’s often because the couple wore trendy clothing that very much reflected the time they were taken. It may be tempting to go with an outfit that’s all the rage right now, but consider that your photos will outlive any particular fashion. Instead, focus on classic pieces that flatter and compliment your frame, highlighting your best features. We want to see you in your best light!

Go For Neutrals

Pops of color can be a fun addition to your regular wardrobe, and a colorful accessory or two may not be amiss in your engagement photos. However, before wearing that red dress or those bright green pants, consider whether it might be a distraction that takes the focus away from you and your partner. We want to see you, not your clothes! Stick to neutrals, pastels, and a cool-toned color palette to keep the focus on you, your partner, and the love the two of you share.

Add Beachy Props

Props can add a fun, personalized touch to your photos. For extra personality, choose items that reflect your beachy theme. Consider printing your wedding date on a large piece of driftwood, or on some pretty seashells. The only limit is your imagination!

Wear Complementary Outfits, But Don’t Match

It’s a good idea to coordinate you and your partner’s outfits so that you don’t clash, but it’s equally important not to perfectly match and draw away the focus. This couple had the idea of wearing a dress and a hat that matched with a bold color, while wearing otherwise neutral clothing. Coordination helps you look put-together without being distracting.

Choose Long Dresses for Beach Photos

Beaches are notoriously windy! If you or your partner choose to wear a dress, select one with a longer skirt so that you won’t be constantly pulling it down when the wind picks up. Maxi (extends to the ankles) and midi (extends to the shin) lengths are perfect for this purpose while still looking classic and beautiful.
